October 27, 2006: “Roots and Fruits” part 2: “Indian” Jazz

This show continues our investigations of the alternative roots of jazz, and the music that was developed from these roots. Two specific areas are the focus: Roma (or “Gypsy”) jazz (the Roma originated in India) and jazz and its connections to India, riffing off of our previous show on jazz and Native American (“Indian”) music. Includes readings from Vijay Prashad. Bryan also asks– is jamming around the campfire better than sitting in a concert hall? Find out on this edition of TFR. . .

i heard your show on friday and was very impressed. this is what we need more of in this town…(and on KCSB, where the jazz is too often too straight for my tastes, though i like the whole range of jazz).

on a self-promotional note with my musician hat on, may i send you my group Headless Household’s latest album, Blur Joan? i think you may like it (or parts of it). we’re wildly eclectic but with heavy doses of jazz and free playing instincts involved… we just got a nice review in Cadence, and another recent review in Jazz Times. also, we’ll be doing our 17th annual xmas concert at Center Stage Theater on Monday, Dec. 4 and would love to have you come check it out if you can.

please let me know if it’s ok to send you our CD and info, and where to send. in any case, keep up the fine work.

    best, joe woodard
